Lakes of Blood and Ash
Wellspring of the Heavenly Mirror
All courts do not begin mighty. All courts could never dream to reach the heights of hubris and power to name themselves Heaven’s Mirror. Yet, those gods that rise, they are incalculable in their reach and pride. Such it was that a humble spring god that fed one of the only rivers in the dry lands of what would become Akhet began to dream or something more. A court truly born in the darkest of times, the Twin Calamities. Created when the sky was broken open and a deluge flooded the dusty basin of Zangwan, The Lonely Valley.
Since that time, the region has become a great wellspring of food and in turn humanity has multiplied exponentially. This wealth of worship has done much to insulate Al’Kawthar from any form of investigation. The Censor of the South, Wong Bongerok, is a fast friend and often enjoys tea with the Goddess of Lake Country. The whole of the court owes their existence to Kawthar and they have bent themselves to tending the rivers and indebting mortals to its fulfillment of their desires. Such methods, and the existence of a great cult to Kawthat in the Kingdom of Akhet, has allowed the court to grow rich beyond fathoming. Yet, Kawthar saw greater promise than that in the early days when Akhet was an Empire, spreading her name across the South.
Ultimately the Court of the Heavenly Mirror has been lucky. Red Stalking Bear keeps to himself and his court is busied with their own personal affairs more than any vendetta against the Water Courts. The Court as well was born after the Usurpation and has only know success and comfort. They see the poverty and suffering of those around them and they feel the grip of the Immaculate Faith – so they see the difficulty. But, they have always been above it. Even the Immaculates allow Al’Kawthat and her’s great flexibility in the celebration of natural events. When you hold the reins of human life such things tend to flow your way.
Al’Kawthar, Nation God of Akhet and Maiden of the Headwaters
The maiden of the river is a cunning being that has played the region into her grasp time and time again. A hero of the Balorian Crusade, recognized by Heaven, fawned over by the censor meant to judge her. She is the desirous nature of the maid, the life giving water of the mother. She wants all Akhet to be her own and to flood out even beyond it’s dirty bowl into the hills and on into the desert. A terrestrial god, she knows true power for her kind lies in the elementals and their courts. So has she every paid them every attention and showed them how they might profit their dominion when playing to her vision. The maiden is a dangerous thing, calm on it’s surface, the depths are hungry.
